Online Maths Tutoring

I am a researcher in the field of Cognitive Neuroscience, having graduated with a degree in Cognitive Science from the University of Edinburgh in 2019. I currently work as a maths tutor to small after-school classes. My degree has helped me develop a range of skills in programming, AI theory and statistical modelling. My studies in Cognitive Science have shaped my teaching approach: not just the problems people face in academics, but a thorough understanding of the cognitive mechanisms that bring about different ways of viewing and understanding problems. Through my background in social care, I have developed a keen interest in social welfare, sustainability and equality. I aim to learn how best to use my skills in the former to enact change in the latter.

Tutoring Experience

I am an MA Cognitive Science graduate, having recently completed my degree at the University of Edinburgh. I have been tutoring both 1 on 1 and group sessions for the past 3 years, from ages 8 to 18, including students with learning difficulties. I bring a wealth of experience and practical resources to help students towards both a better understanding of maths and improvements in examination performance.

Tutoring Approach

My teaching method is student-centric: finding out what areas the student is and isn't comfortable in, and working through what cognitive mechanics underpin the areas of difficulty. Often when there is a fundamental misunderstanding of the maths, a varied approach of audio, visual, worked examples, practise and student-explanation based learning is best. In other cases, it often comes down to practise and confidence. My approach is to find out what the students needs are, to understand their way of thinking, and to work together to find what form of learning will best help the student.
