I am a mathematician and glass artist who has a strong passion for education. I received my undergraduate degree from the University of California, San Diego in Mathematics and Applied Science, and my graduate degree from the University of California, Santa Cruz in Pure Mathematics - specifically Algebraic Topology with an emphasis on Stable Homotopy Theory.
I have over a decade of experience in math education helping students in high school and college (the UK equivalent of years 10-11 and University level). My specialty is helping students understand the "big picture" - where their particular subject fits into the grand scheme, and building tools that are universal in their application. My goal with every student is to help them to become more self-sufficient by equipping them with the skills needed to think critically about new problems they may encounter.
2013-2019: The University of California, Santa Cruz Math Department Teaching Assistant - Various courses: college algebra, pre-calculus, single variable calculus, multivariable and vector calculus, real analysis, differential geometry, linear algebra.
2009-2019: Private Tutor - Various courses: standardized test preparation, college algebra, pre-calculus, single-variable, multivariable, and vector calculus, euclidean, and differential geometry.
2009-2010: Instructor - Summer cram courses: SAT 1, SAT 2: Math, high school pre-calculus, geometry, and algebra.
My approach is largely theory-based based on the belief that good scores flow from a firm understanding of the underlying concepts coupled with diligent practice. Having experience teaching in both glassblowing and math has given me an appreciation for different teaching and learning modalities.
I firmly believe that it is the responsibility of the instructor to reach the student(s) on their level and to teach them in a way that suits the student best. Determining the student's motivating factors and interests allow us to find common ground in applying math to their life and justifying its necessity.
