Mostly recently I have been delivering 1: 1 or small group maths and science tuition in schools. Prior to completing the PGCE I worked as a scientist in industry. I am enthusiastic about science and keen to help others develop their understanding of, and interest in, science and maths.
I have completed a PGCE and have experience of teaching in a variety of mainstream schools, including independent schools, other educational settings and across different ability ranges. This has involved teaching KS3 and KS4 (GCSE) for the majority of the time but also some A Level Chemistry.
Within schools I have also worked with individuals and small groups. The in-school tuition started as catch-up following the pandemic but has continued for the last few years and has included a number of SEND students and also some for whom English is not their first language.
Over the last 9 years I have tutored Maths and Science up to KS3 and individual Sciences (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) up to GCSE. This has been across the AQA, OCR and IGCSE Edexcel exam boards and Chemistry following Cambridge IGCSE course. GCSE maths has also been tutored, following AQA and OCR syllabi.
In addition I have also worked with students aiming for Common Entrance Exams at 11+ and 13+. There has also been the opportunity to work with some students being home schooled, teaching both Maths and Science, and including practical work within Science lessons.
Initially I like to find out what the student does know and the areas that are proving more challenging. We can then work to develop these weaker areas through increasing knowledge, discussion of ideas and using exam questions to check understanding and progress.
I use a range of techniques and methods when tutoring/teaching and the exact methods depend on what works best for the student. Time can be spent reviewing content covered in school or previewing new topics so the student has a basic understanding that they can build on in class. Alternatively the focus can be on exam technique, helping to understand what is expected in the answers in addition to using questions to monitor knowledge and progress.
Please note that advertised prices are based on 1:1 sessions.
