Hi! I’m Johnny and I’m an electric bass guitarist with a BA (Hons) in Popular Music and a HND in Modern Musicianship. I am also proficient in sound design, music production and vocals. I have gigged extensively both on the bass and as a vocalist across the UK over the last 20 years in various function groups and creative bands.
I have over two years’ experience teaching bass to children, teens, and adults across a broad range of playing abilities. I am proficient across many different playing styles from Heavy Metal to RnB. I can read music notation/tab and also transcribe by ear depending on the piece or passage.
I have vast experience in helping my students prepare for both school/college exams and external Rockschool graded examinations. I am familiar with these processes and know how to help students musically and mentally to achieve their certificates.
I appreciate that practice can be difficult outside of lesson times, so I always try to make myself available for questions to help students overcome any challenges by making the most of their practice time; helping them to feel good about what they are achieving in the interim between lessons.
I approach music tuition with a sense of encouragement, belief, and respect. I am engaging and like to make lessons fun while being sure to communicate and uphold long/short terms goals with the student.
I arrange lesson content specific to the tutees' interests and often transcribe bass lines/ exercises specific to requirements. I pride myself on providing context through the provision of study guides specifically (created from a variety of learning resources) for each student so we can link the exercises to the concepts and techniques used in each study piece.
I use Ableton Live in my lessons to create midi grooves using real drum kit samples which can be sped up/slowed down with no drop in quality, so it sounds as though you are practising with a real drummer! I also like to break down drum patterns to show the inner workings of rhythm so that my students can build their understanding of how the bass and drums 'lock-in' to make a groove really work.
