Online Drama Teacher

I am 32 year old based in Greater London wanting to tutor from home whilst I pause my teacher training due to health reasons and COVID 19. I have a First Class BA (Hons) in Theatre Studies awarded by University of Manchester, thought I studied with Rose Bruford College. I have had experience as an unqualified teacher as a one-woman drama department (see experience) at an independent girls secondary school. I am have a warm, reassuring manner, enthusiasm and passion for my subject, and consider communication, both oral and written, to be my strongest and most valuable assets. Combined with my ease with using technology and my unrelenting good-humour, I am an ideal candidate to join your team of tutors.

Tutoring Experience

I was the sole Drama teacher at The Laurels School Sept 2018-July 2019 where at both KS3 and KS4. I also taught Y8 English. With little pre-existing infrastructure for the subject, I devised the entire KS3 Drama curriculum. This was an immensely challenging, rewarding and exciting experience; topics covered include Mask, Verbatim theatre, introduction to stimulus-based devising and Stanislavski’s system. The school is not academically selective, nor are classes streamed, meaning I gained valuable experience in differentiation and personalisation. I taught AQA’s GCSE Drama and thoroughly enjoy teaching the breadth of the course to students. I found facilitating students’ devising process particularly thrilling as I equipped them with tools (both dramaturgical and performance-based) and inspirational source material and watch them exceed their own expectations. My 2018/19 Y11 cohort achieved grades 5 – 9 in their GCSEs.

Having paused my own teacher training due to health issues in February 2020, and due to both COVID-19 Lockdown and the ill-health of the Drama teacher, I saw the GCSE drama cohort through March to June teaching via Zoom and Google Classroom. They had no written evidence on which to base a grade so I embarked upon an intense catch up course of my own devising and created my own assessment which mirrored the drama GCSE AQA exam and assessments. In partnership with the existing Drama teacher, I taught the girls for two hours a week plus numerous feedback and one-to-one tuition slots. The five girls were awarded 9, 8, 8, 7 and 6 respectively. I found this married my teaching experience effectively with my comfort in using the online medium having been peer mentor at Rose Bruford College.

Tutoring Approach

I get to know the student and am adept at quickly developing a rapport.
We discuss areas of weakness and establish a bespoke learning plan.
Through a combination of fun activities, accessible, failsafe writing frameworks for essay answers, practical methods of how to analyse and evaluate both text and performance, students acquire the knowledge and skills they need to master the exams and coursework.
A great many students take the subject for a love a performing but do not have the literacy, analytical and evaluative skills excel at the written work which, for example, in the AQA Drama GCSE, makes up 70% of the overall grade.
