I am a teaching assistant in a thriving secondary school, and will be starting a schools direct teaching training course in secondary mathematics in September 2021 with the same school. I thoroughly enjoy working with pupils, and watching them grow and develop. As I have been through the education system, I understand what pressures pupils face. Obtaining my university degree made me realise that everyone has the potential to become what they want, and with dedication and hard work, we can all achieve. I don't expect my pupils to get everything right all the time, and feel confident with everything. I, just like my pupils, are human, and I show in my tutoring it's ok to get things wrong, it's how we learn.

Tutoring Experience

I have 3 years of tutoring experience working with the award winning tuition centre, Explore Learning. Throughout this time, I have built positive relationships with both pupils and parent/guardians, and developed my skills as a tutor. I became confident with tutoring pupils on lengthy worded questions, and finding the key information from the question, to then apply their knowledge. I won tutor of the quarter in my first year, proving to be a reliable and trustworthy tutor. My ability to build positive relationships with the pupils was evident, as many pupils would choose to be tutored by me.

I have 13 months of experience working as a teaching assistant in a thriving secondary school. Throughout my time here, I have confidently supported a classroom that contains pupils with significant SEN needs. I have built their confidence, and discussed questions with them in order to build their current understanding. Using a variety of learning methods, I have broken things down for them, so that they can access learning. I have attended review meetings with parents/guardians, to discuss how best to support these pupils in the classroom.

I have secured a place on a secondary mathematics teacher training course with the same school ( schools direct course) which will start in September 2021. In order to prepare for the course, I am currently undertaking a subject enhancement course with Eureka Online College, where I have been studying secondary mathematics topics across the secondary curriculum, the exam boards, and how test papers are broken down into different areas and marks.

Tutoring Approach

I am a caring individual, who loves to build confidence within pupils. I have gone through the education system, and understand the academic pressures pupils face. With classroom sizes meaning pupils are not given 1:1 support, to pupils not wanting to put their hand up in fear of getting the wrong answer, to pupils wanting to revisit previous topic areas, are things I am all too familiar with. It might be that pupils are struggling with worded questions relating to fractions, and need support with reinforcing previous knowledge, before they can successfully apply that knowledge. I will assess what specific topic areas the pupil is finding challenging, what their learning needs are, and how I can fill in these gaps. My tutoring approach is to break questions down into smaller, manageable steps, and build up to the overall answer. This paired with practicing questions helps pupils to master mathematical skills and become confident. I like to work collaboratively, by using questioning that requires the pupil to critically think for themselves, instead of just talking at them and giving them the answer, as this does not help them to learn. I believe tuition is a collaborative process, and it's my responsibility to adapt and cater to the pupils need's not the other way round. Seeing pupils get a question right all by themselves and have that a-ha moment is truly rewarding, and is the reason why I love tutoring and building positive rapport with pupils.
