Alongside my interests in helping to develop young people and the sciences, I am a keen football fan (Charlton Athletic!) and enjoying running and travel.
The best part of the this job is being able to help students understand tricky concepts that they have been struggling with. I truly believe that with patience, effort, and understanding all students can make good progress.
I have 7 years of science teaching experience including:
3 years as head of department
2 years as deputy head of department.
I have taught biology, chemistry and physics to GCSE level. This include a range of classes at a range of levels, from entry level certificate to triple science.
I have also taught biology A level.
My approach centres on building confidence, which I believe comes from having success in the subject.
It is important that the teacher truly knows what the student knows, this allows explanations for more difficult concepts to be built on the solid foundation that the student already has.
These clear explanations then lead to checks for understanding, for example talking through different, real world, examples and trying to apply the information to new scenarios which the student recognises in everyday life, or from their previous studies.
I then work with students through example exam questions, gradually reducing the amount of help provided until the student can confidently work through these on their own. These will be marked and checked with concise and actionable feedback given.
Help with exam question technique will also come later on, once the student understands the concept at hand.
