After a 20 year career in a numbers business I have retrained as a Maths Tutor preferring one-on-one delivery as there is greater impact therefore successful students. Having taught yoga to children and having a teenager I have realised how Maths is not just a skill that can be taught by rout. It should also focus on confidence building through observing how the student learns, letting the student build up the knowledge from easier to harder questions and how I can link the knowledge of Maths to other subjects and real life situations to help them realise that Maths is in today's everyday life. By linking topics it makes it so much easier to remember the many concepts which are entailed in Maths.
Through the School Centred Initial Teacher Training with the Cabot Learning Federation, I had several placements in schools in Bristol. And I have been tutoring for 2 years now. I have helped students go from Foundation Maths to Higher Maths at the GCSE level, a year 11 student from not wanting to take A Levels Maths to now having changed his mind and I have helped a dyslexic student get into the top set!!
My teaching approach is very individually based seeing what needs to be re-taught or re-enforced at the base level in order to get a strong footing to move onto higher topics. I also get students to connect with the concepts not have them floating somewhere in the brain without an anchor to go back to when embarking on new concepts.
