Ian

Hello! My name is Ian and I am a Scottish piano teacher living and working in North London. I have been teaching piano for 10 years this year, and hold a Bachelors of Music Degree in Classical Piano from The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. I also play Alto and Soprano Saxophones to a +Grade 8 standard, as well as working as an actor, having graduated from RADA in 2020 - so I bring an all-round creative approach to my teaching!

Tutoring Experience

I have 10 years experience as a private piano teacher, from beginners to professionals aged 7-70. I have taken many students through their ABRSM exams up to Grade 8 level, with multiple students achieving high ranking distinction passes. I also teach students who desire a more casual approach to learning and playing the piano, helping them achieve their goals of being able to play their favourite pieces of music and favourite songs across all genres and styles.

Tutoring Approach

As I am a classically trained pianist, I of course have a passion for classical music, teaching students to read music, and developing a strong and proficient technique. I took the ABRSM Grades myself all the way to Grade 8 (which I passed with distinction at age 17) and have taken numerous students through their grades with a 100% pass rate, and many achieving high distinction passes! I value the ABRSM system, and I can confidently guide a student through that process with my experience and expertise. I also love jazz music, pop music and learning and playing by ear. I know all too well the thrill of being able to learn your favourite pieces just for the enjoyment of it, and I have had many happy students who have followed this more casual approach to learning to play the piano with me as their teacher. I aspire to be an encouraging, supportive tutor with every individual. Everybody is different, and we can work together to achieve what is best for you!
