Economics Lessons in Oswestry

I left school without any qualifications to take up a coach trimmer apprenticeship with a car dealer in Northumberland. Having completed this, I left to begin a HND in Transport and Physical Distribution (part employer-sponsored) in 1979.

After completing my MA in 1986, I was employed as a research assistant at Bristol Polytechnic, which research was funded by the then Department for Education and Science. This focused on statistical process control, a technique used in lean production, which was spreading through UK manufacturing at this time. It was during this time that I began teaching. Loving it, I began a PGCE at the Institute of Education, Univ. of London when my research was completed, and published.

I am now doing supply, and moderating for AQA's Extended project Qualification (level 3), and doing the other things full-time teaching made it difficult to do, such as hill walking, kayaking, etc.

Tutoring Experience

I began teaching in higher education in 1986, at what was then Bristol Polytechnic, teaching industrial relations and human resource management on HNC/D, degree and post graduate courses.

From 1990 to 2014, I taught Business studies and economics on HNC/D, GCSE, Level 2 and 3 vocational provision and A Level at North Shropshire College, Oswestry. Took voluntary redundancy in November 2014, then doing supply teaching to February 2015, when I began teaching again - next paragraph.

2015-18: taught GCSE and A level Economics at Adcote School for Girls, Shrewsbury. Took voluntary redundancy, finishing with the School in December 2018. I've been doing supply since then.

I've also tutored students taking A Levels in economics and business studies; Extended Project Qualification; and GCSE Economics.

Tutoring Approach

I've always bee passionate about active learning. Additionally, I'm a qualified Subject learning Coach, which helps encourage students to take responsibility for their learning and reflect on development more fully.
