My professional background spans copywriting, journalism, lecturing, editing, authoring, and publishing – all to a senior level. That's to say language has been the focus of my life since I was about 15-years-old. After concluding my MA at UEA – in their words, 'the oldest and most prestigious writing programme in the UK' – I set about finishing the manuscript for a novel. That book is currently under consideration by a few literary agents and publishers.

I'm also editor-in-chief for a prominent literary journal called Tar Press, with whom I've published work by Booker Prize judges and several internationally renowned authors, including Amit Chaudhuri and Julianne Pachico. Last year we were awarded £2000 by the Santander Enterprise Fund.

Tutoring Experience

Although fairly new to tutoring, I've been lecturing creative writing on a freelance basis to undergraduates at London's Arcadia University for the past two years. As Senior Copywriter for a major e-commerce brand, I spent a significant portion of my time editing and teaching junior writers and freelancers. Generally speaking, my reputation as an editor has always relied on good communication with writers and a sophisticated understanding of how language and literature works.

I also know the pressures of passing an 11+, and the hoop-jumping required to help an examiner mark the paper correctly.

Tutoring Approach

I'm here to help students understand their subject – whether literature, film, or psychology – and express themselves clearly and effectively.

In our first session we'll establish a strategy, identifying areas of concern and drawing up a schedule addressing those concerns.

In subsequent sessions we'll discuss the books or films on a micro-level and in relation to the wider culture. Equally importantly, we'll talk about what this particular exam board is asking for and how we can achieve that most efficiently. One thing many teachers often miss is the importance of writing good, clear responses to exam questions – once you break it down it's not too complicated.
