Harriet

I'm a friendly down-to-earth Mathematics graduate of Swansea University (Mathematics BSc, First Class Honours) and Imperial College, London (Applied Mathematics MSc, Merit). I have also completed a post graduate certificate in Business Performance Management at the University of Salford, Manchester (Merit).

I am currently on maternity leave but usually work as an enterprise architect specialising in technology (maths, machine learning etc). I work full time hours over four days which can change due to business needs but usually with some notice and I will work this around student requirements.

I am a social mobility advocate and mentor.

Tutoring Experience

I have over a decade experience in private tutoring of mathematics as well as being a dinghy sailing instructor. tutored various ages and skills, from Primary education all the way through to A-level. I have had one year work experience in one of the top schools in the country, working as an assistant Mathematics teacher. This included general classroom assistance, teaching and mentoring small groups, as well as whole class teaching. I completed the Student Associate Scheme at a Bromley school, through Plymouth University. I can offer support to students currently attending school or full GCSE/A level teaching.

I am pleased to say my students all progress well, and often come top of their cohort, with a previous student coming top of his year in his GCSE exam. A lot of my students comment on my explaining skills and find it easier to understand my teaching methods than those taught at school. They like my flexibility as I work with them, and am happy to alter my methods if they already are comfortable with theirs, so that I can strengthen their understanding. I welcome questions and see improvements within weeks of teaching, particularly less confident students, as they find me easy to approach and are comfortable asking questions.

Tutoring Approach

I have a mentoring approach to teaching, work with the student to discover what their best way of working is and build confidence. My greatest strength is working with students who find maths a challenge as this is usually due to a unique learning style; these students will get the most benefit of one to one sessions as I can adapt my style of teaching to fit the students.

Some people like to do practice questions, in which case I have a number of text books which I can get these from. I have a very open mind when it comes to learning styles, and have completed an essay on this subject. I do however, provide direction when necessary, in order to fulfill the students capabilities. I also usually provide homework however always encouraging priorititisation of school work as well as balancing wellbeing.

My preference is to have face to face sessions at either my, or your home but I can be flexible if you prefer online.
