I am a recent MPhil graduate from the University of Cambridge, who is hard working, efficient, and has a patient, empathetic manner with students. I make sure to tailor my lessons to student's individual learning needs. So, whether your student be a visual learner, a practical learner, or someone who likes to take copious notes and learn from that, I will suit my lesson plan to that learning type!
I have experience running writing classes while at Cambridge as Writing officer for the Marlowe Society, helping fellow students out with play writing, as well as running classes with primary school students for my arts award. Teaching groups of primary school children helped develop my patience and understanding with stubborn or unwilling children a great deal. In addition, I have lots of experience being on the student side of Cambridge supervisions, and plan on putting the methods I experienced in those contact hours into practice.
My approach tends to be that of being friendly, patient, and trying to set the students goals which are simple and achievable. I will set out a larger goal which we want to hit over the course of the lesson, but then break that down into hierarchical steps, so that the process is is not overwhelming for the student. However, I also will test the student through conversation, trying to tease analytical, insightful thoughts out of them. This is true especially in subjects such as English, History, and Philosophy, where analysis and insight is crucial. When it comes to marking I will also be ruthless, and yet always constructive and helpful. That, I think, is the best way to get a student to learn and improve.
