Private Maths Tutor in Carshalton

Hi! I’m Graham. I am a highly qualified and experienced maths education specialist and private maths tutor, specialising in all age groups from Year 3 up to GCSE and A-Level, teaching both online or at my place in Sutton. With over 20 years of experience of teaching in schools, including both primary and secondary, 10 years as an Assistant or Deputy Headteacher, leading mathematics teaching across schools, and qualifying as a Headteacher, I am in a rare, possibly even unique position to support students’ development in mathematics.

Although I teach across all ages and abilities, with some students attaining grade 9 at GCSE and A* at A-Level – I am particularly sought out by parents whose children are lacking self-confidence. This is because of my ability to put students at ease, help them to gain a greater understanding of maths and become more confident in themselves as mathematicians.

Please note - the price quoted here is for each 45 minute session.

Tutoring Experience

My qualification set is probably unique - after attending Cambridge University, initially to study Mathematics, but eventually graduating in Psychology, I qualified as both a Primary and Secondary teacher - later gaining the postgraduate ‘Maths Specialist Teacher’ qualification in leading mathematics in primary schools, as well as qualifying as a Headteacher (NPQH). Whilst leading mathematics in a primary school for many years, I was seconded to the local authority as a consultant in primary mathematics, supporting other schools in improving the quality of their mathematics teaching.

Since leaving my role as a Deputy Head in a primary school, I am now employed in a secondary school teaching mathematics to groups of year 11 students to enable them to succeed in their mathematics GCSE. I have now been offering one-to-one mathematics tuition since 2018, both online and in person.

Tutoring Approach

The key to the success of my teaching is the fact that I adapt my teaching, and even my personality, to suit each individual student, and therefore put students at ease, as well as having a vast knowledge base of mathematics, its teaching, and misconceptions that students have about maths.

My students are extremely varied – I teach students who are taking GCSEs and aiming for grades 7, 8 or 9, or A* at A-Level as effectively as students who are in Year 3 whose lack of confidence in mathematics is affecting their emotional wellbeing. I have students who are confident in mathematics and are challenging themselves to achieve higher grades; students who enjoy and are enthusiastic about maths; students with a variety of special educational needs, including those with ASD; students who suffer from severe maths anxiety; students who have missed out on maths teaching for one reason or another and therefore need to catch up – and I build positive relationships with all of these students, helping them to feel more confident in themselves and in their mathematical ability, as well as helping them to understand how to cope when they are finding maths difficult.
