Tutoring Experience

My story:
Oxford as a city fascinated me; I met a number of parents with backgrounds in education who were seeking new teaching approaches because conventional schooling alone wasn't meeting their child’s needs. Education felt more explorative compared to my upbringing in Surrey and parents were open-minded to alternatives, from homeschooling and private tutoring to Reggio and Steiner schools. I had been tutoring alongside my studies since leaving school and although I was captivated by innovative teaching methods, I wanted to teach in state schools for a few years to gain more traditional teaching experience.

After two years of teaching at two schools in Oxford and one in London, I couldn't escape the overcrowded feeling of schools. At times, I had over 200 students and not nearly enough hours in the day to give each of them the attention they needed. So, when I moved to my next school in London, I asked to teach smaller groups of students who required extra support in English, in addition to my usual GCSE and A-level teaching. The goal was for these KS3 students to receive English lessons in groups of 6:1 for one year, building their confidence and equipping them with the tools to rejoin and excel in larger groups. These classes quickly became the highlight of my week, and my students thrived in the calm and supportive environment.

After four years in schools, I decided to focus my time on specialised tutoring and shift towards primary education to address the root of the learning challenges I had observed in secondary schools. Alongside tutoring, I am working towards my Assessment Practising Certificate (APC), which will enable me to diagnose dyslexia in both children and adults. The Cove was created to develop confidence in the classroom by providing research-based tutoring for students, to teach in a calm and safe learning environment which welcomes parents, and to empower children to unlock their full learning potential.
