Online Computer Studies / I.T. Teacher

I was born in Dublin in Ireland and lived there until I came to England to work in 1992, having obtained a Computer Engineering degree and a Mathematics degree from the University of Dublin, Trinity College. I worked for Norwich Union Insurance Company for 2 years and a small land surveying company for a further 2 years after completing my studies. I worked as a computer programmer/ analyst in both companies. I have always enjoyed sport and played a lot of rugby, football and cricket in both school and club. I now live with my wife in Bournemouth.

Tutoring Experience

I have over 23 years' experience of teaching Computer Science at both A level and GCSE. I have a degree in Computer Engineering and a second one in Mathematics. I was a secondary school teacher until I retired in 2020. I especially enjoy teaching students who are committed to doing their best, even if they struggle with aspects of the syllabus. I have over 12,000 hours programming experience in a number of languages such as Python, Pascal, Javascript, SQL, Visual Basic, VBA and assembly language. I have extensive experience of managing A level and GCSE Computer Science projects. I have also taught over 100 hours of online Computer Science lessons.

Tutoring Approach

My approach is always to focus on the exams, making sure that all available past papers have been completed. I try to explain complex topics without using technical jargon. I like students to be active in the lessons and to feel they can ask questions. I am a flexible teacher who will try to accommodate students as much as possible, but do expect students to play their part by doing the work set and being fully engaged in their studies. I want the lessons to be as interactive as possible, so that the student grows in confidence and is not afraid to try things even if they make mistakes. I want the student to become confident in their ability and knowledge so that the exams hold no fear for them.
