I'm a passionate educator with 12 years of experience helping students achieve their English GCSE goals. As someone who genuinely loves literature and language, I bring enthusiasm and creativity to every lesson. My background combines formal education (2:1 English & American Literature degree from University of Kent) with real-world teaching experience across different settings - from secondary schools to dance academies. I understand that every student learns differently, which is why I tailor my approach to each individual's needs and learning style. When I'm not tutoring, I'm a musician and songwriter, which helps me bring creative approaches to learning that make English engaging and memorable.
English GCSE Tutor (Gary RemovedTutoring, 2012-Present)
Music Coach (Caroline Clare School of Dance, 2011-2023)
Cover Supervisor & Teaching Assistant (Wrotham Secondary School, 2010-2012)
My teaching philosophy centers on making English accessible and engaging for every student, regardless of their starting point. I understand that GCSE Language papers present unknown extracts, so I carefully select texts that resonate with students - often using contemporary authors like Nick Hornby whose writing style connects with reluctant readers. While I work extensively with past papers, I also create bespoke resources tailored to each student's interests and reading level.
I pride myself on being highly responsive to each student's needs. I can recognise when to slow the pace if concepts are becoming overwhelming, and equally when to challenge students who aren't pushing themselves. This sensitivity comes from years of one-to-one work and understanding that every student has different emotional and academic needs.
Reading aloud is central to my approach - both having students read to me and reading to them. This immediately highlights areas where comprehension, pronunciation, or confidence need attention. I demonstrate paragraph writing at the standard they're aiming for, showing rather than just telling them what examiners want to see.
Everything I teach is grounded in the actual exam board criteria. Students learn to understand what examiners are looking for, which builds both their confidence and their strategic approach to answering questions. My goal is not just to improve grades, but to develop genuine appreciation for language and literature that extends beyond the exam room.
