English Lessons in Glasgow

My name is Gabriel Removed and I am an American permanent resident of the UK living and working in Glasgow. I have worked in academia for 25 years with a specialization in eighteenth-century British literature and culture. I earned my Ph.D. in English Language and Literature at Princeton University in 2009. Since then I have taught in every area of English-language literature from Anglo-Saxon to contemporary fiction. I currently work part-time as a teacher at the University of Glasgow, and I am now also seeking to take on some students for private tutoring. I excel in one-on-one teaching by drawing on my professional experience advising students from secondary school to university-level researchers. I am available to teach online and in person and happy to customize a learning plan that suits your needs.

Tutoring Experience

I have taught English and scholarly writing from the secondary school level all the way up to Ph.D. direction. My knowledge and experience run from Beowulf through Zadie Smith. I have worked with students aged 15 to 60+ in a range of private and institutional settings from a private secondary school to public and private universities (from regional schools to the ivy league). I am currently affiliated with the Schools of Critical Studies and Education at the University of Glasgow. Beyond working with students on reading and analyzing literature, I am especially well prepared to conduct writing instruction. Students will find me an excellent guide into a range of genres of scholarly writing, from personal essays to essays featuring close analysis and research-based approaches. I am also available to help with theses and book-length research projects. In the latter regard, I also have significant experience as an editor of scholarly articles and books.

Tutoring Approach

In every case, my methods for teaching are based on this principle: every complex learning objective or academic project should be broken down into its fundamental elements upon which thoroughgoing and nuanced understanding depend. Writing a compelling sentence is the fundament upon which compelling paragraphs, chapters, and scholarly monographs are built. Each of these types of composition depends on the other to create cohesive and successful writing. Likewise, understanding literature begins at developing a passion for single words and figures of speech upon which the substance and nuances of masterworks depend. I work from one line to a book, from a word to the whole of an epic. And each of my students finds themselves taking an individual path from the mastery of rudiments to the limits of what can be known. Beginning with the basics and moving onto advanced concepts ensures no stone gets left unturned and no questions are left unvoiced.
