I'm very enthusiastic about teaching, believing that a solid base builds for a better future. I have always strived in my own education and consistently achieved A grades from secondary education onwards. I possess a degree in psychology and have recently graduated in MSc Psychiatric Research where I exhibited a high level of academic writing, research and analytical skills. I also love travelling and meeting people of different cultures, engage in community and youth work, and study pottery and aviation.
I have accumulated 10 years experience in tutoring GCSE students. I have also travelled abroad and, while studying for my Masters in TEFL, taught at a couple of NGO's as an English Teacher. I have also worked abroad at international schools as primary teachers for both reception and year 2. These experiences have helped shape the tutoring that I currently do, giving me more experience in lesson preparation and exposing me to various teaching methodologies and learning styles. I currently tutor students from year 5 onwards, helping them prepare for their 11+ exams, KS3 work and GCSE's. Previously, I worked as the head of English at a tuition centre where I was responsible for implementing diagnostic assessments for English, ordering teaching resources for staff, collating my own resources, training new tutors, and liaising with parents and schools regarding student progress. I have also proof read dissertations in the past and currently assist people in career progression with CV and interview prep.
My approach to tutoring is to be selective; rather than focus on many subjects I focus exclusively on English. This gives me the time to focus on building my resources, remaining up to date with changes in the curriculum through key stage 2- 4, and to build on my own teaching skills. I see English as a unique subject in that imagination, creativity and critical thinking are key. I have helped GCSE students in the past prepare for controlled assessments, analysing literary texts, dissecting writing skills and building vocabulary and comprehension. Where applicable I also correct grammar and believe where grammar needs improving, students need to return to their building blocks in order to move forward. My approach is to scaffold students so they can complete work above their academic level.
My first lesson will include a diagnostic to assess your child's level and see which areas need improving. From this I can then structure lessons around their needs. I also have all the resources I require for my students and therefore do not need parents to purchase additional texts; all resources I provide are included in the tuition fee at no extra cost.
Note: I have an up to date DBS and can provide references as well as proof of qualifications.
