I grew up in Acqui Terme in Piedmont, Italy, and I have a solid background in Classical studies, having undertaken a secondary school with a curriculum based on Italian literature, Latin and ancient Greek. I moved to England in 2005 and I could achieve my dream of completing a PhD in Classics and Ancient History about an early Jewish or early Christian novel, "Joseph and Aseneth". During my PhD, I had some valuable experience in teaching seminars to small classes of about 5 students, and I used to enjoy helping my colleagues and friends with learning Italian phrases and pronunciation. I have recently worked in various Higher education settings for instance, as a library facilities supervisor and as an administrator. Although these roles focus on aspects of customer service, information research and support, I believe that I have acquired a broader understanding of different people's needs and aspirations, and I thoroughly enjoy being able to help people achieve their goals.
As for my interests, I am regularly taking part in a Bible study group with my neighbours and friends and I am learning to play the small lap harp.
I have been tutoring on First Tutor since July 2022, and I am finding the process very rewarding. I helped with preparation of humanistic subjects in Italian for the purpose of undertaking a "Terza Media" exam, which is a secondary school exam that marks the passage from the 3 years "intermediary" cycle to proper secondary school in Italy. I am currently teaching Italian language for leisure using a range of resources such as narrative stories, history of art e-books, and Operas or song texts, depending on my students' interests and passions.
My education background is rooted in Classical studies, which I pursued in secondary school and for my first degree in Italy, and which I specialised in at the University of Warwick. During my PhD, I taught Classical Civilisation classes to small groups of undergraduate students in Classics and Ancient History.
I am also passionate about the English language and about the best strategies to continue learning and improving lexical knowledge, grammar accuracy, pronunciation, and academic skills. In fact, I am currently helping some friends improve their English skills via Skype, and I am supporting a tutee with her preparation towards the IELTS academic exam.
In a private tutoring role, I would first ensure that we agree with the tutees about the learning objectives that they aim to achieve, so that we can plan suitable lessons both for short and for long term goals. I am known to my friends and colleagues for being patient and encouraging. Overall, it brings me joy being able to help other people.
