Hiya! I am a French, Chinese and International Relations graduate from Exeter University, obtaining both an undergraduate and a Masters degree in French and Chinese translation. Having been brought up in a bilingual family, with Arabic as my family language, I have always been encouraged to learn languages. Learning French since the age of four, taking taster lessons in Spanish for two years, along with gaining a GCSE in both Italian and Latin all enabled me to negotiate meaning and communicate with different cultures.
I am currently working at a translations company full time, and have continued working as a tutor part time in the evenings as helping others develop their language skills is a huge passion of mine.
I have always been a charismatic, and active person. I have spent 6 months in Taiwan, where I taught English to the local children. It was an amazing and unforgettable experience, which enabled my teaching skills to flourish further.
With regards to revision in the language fields, I could boast my level of grammar and vocabulary knowledge; I was often asked by teachers to explain a grammar technique to a class and was praised for my coherent explanations. My enjoyment of teaching further extended to my home life. During Sixth Form, I would weekly tutor my 10-year-old sister French, who suffers from autism. This experience showed me how patient I am able to be, albeit with a child with learning difficulties, but also how fulfilling it was to be able to watch someone improve in an area that they previously struggled with. On top of this, I have been an online French and English foreign language tutor online since 2020.
I adapt the activities to each individual student that best allows them to take part in the learning process. For example, I will include activities for all types of learning styles: diagrams and mind maps for visual learners, oral communication and fun debates for auditory learners.
I think it is pivotal to create a good atmosphere with each student so they feel comfortable and eager to learn. Therefore, I carefully plan educational games and activities to help students learn without effort and consequently help me to observe their strengths and weaknesses.
I also encourage questions and promote an environment where they are able to tell me if they do not understand something. I will also regularly teach new grammar points and go through many vocabulary exercises, as well as asking students to complete a small homework task at the end of each session.
