Dominic

I am a 24-year-old Cambridge graduate, having just completed my MPhil specialising in Old Norse. With interests in an eclectic range of academic subjects, I enjoy opportunities to challenge my intellectual abilities, and I see tutoring as a learning opportunity for myself as well as my students.

Tutoring Experience

I have effectively been tutoring since secondary school, having taught myself, other students, and my younger brother with learning difficulties. Professionally, I have been a freelance tutor for over a year, mostly for GCSE maths. I am eager to improve, and thus I am very open to students' (and parents') suggestions and requests.

I mostly teach maths as it is the most highly requested subject and the most consistent across different exam boards, but I am open to teaching other subjects (e.g. physics, history, etc.) depending on the specific modules involved. Recently, I have taken on a student requesting help with my specialty at university, Old Norse.

As a Cambridge graduate, I can also provide insight into the university application/interview process and university life in general, if that is of interest to prospective applicants.

Tutoring Approach

Every student learns differently, so naturally, every tutoring session should be adapted to fit the student in question. Past exam questions will be used to identify areas of learning that need improvement and to confirm whether this improvement has been achieved. However, how the topics behind these questions are explained and practiced will depend on the student's preferences.

Some students may wish to focus on exam technique, others on the creation of revision resources, and others still may want to discuss the application of these subjects beyond the world of exams, which is rarely addressed properly in schools. By teaching in a flexible way that classroom teaching cannot usually achieve, I hope that, in addition to improving their academic performance, students will discover how to learn more effectively in general as an individual, which will benefit them at all stages in life.
