Government and Politics
Last year I finally made the switch to teaching, having spent 25 years working as a corporate communications specialist and political lobbyist in Parliament, government and private business. Having supported my own children through and out of education, I wanted to use my experience, academic background and communication skills to do 'something' more worthwhile, something that might make a real, positive impact on young lives.
I am currently providing A-Level tuition (Politics and Business Studies) to a range of students, having just finished teaching A-level Politics and History (maternity cover contract) at Bracknell & Wokingham College. I have taugh both first and second year students in the 16-20 year old age bracket, and alongside traditional classroom-based teaching I provide individual, differentiated support where necessary. I have also covered for Sociology A-level and taught, briefly, Business Studies A-level at Godalming College. I am undertaking my Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) part-time, and completed Preparing to Teach in Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) in 2011.
The key to successful individual tutoring is trust and confidence. By discussing with the student and his/her parents their experiences, achievements and aspirations, we can identify and understand the student's individual needs. Having identified and agreed the key areas to address, for example subject knowledge, essay writing or revision skills, I'll then design and deliver a tailored programme of engaging activities to maximise the student's potential to succeed.
