I empathise with those who have difficulty learning maths: I struggled myself at times, but went on to gain an honours degree in mathematics from a leading university (Durham) and have used mathematical skills in a range of professional and academic contexts. I went on to gain MSc and PhD degrees in other subjects, in part using these skills.
Soon after graduating I went to teach maths abroad (Seychelles) to groups of students who were very varied in ability, knowledge of English and previous educational background. This taught me to develop different strategies in response to the needs of different pupils -- after all, every child is unique and learns in different ways. Since then I have regularly tutored in maths to friends and families. I have taught other subjects (Business and Social Studies) in higher education, both at undergraduate and masters level.
I always ensure that I am sympathetic and responsive. I find new and engaging ways to explain what is going on with a set of concepts, how they fit together and why they make sense. I provide examples and work through them at the pupil's own speed, giving encouragement and sharing the pupil's joy when everything finally makes sense.
