I'm a qualified Maths teacher with over 30 years of experience teaching students of all ages and aspirations. Helping people grow from self-doubt to confidence and skill in Maths is why I became a teacher and still teach after so many years.
My wife is a musician who tutors piano, recorder and music theory. We have three kids, all grown up now. Our daughter's health condition meant that she couldn't go to school much, so we homeschooled her. That experience has given us an insight into what tutoring is like for the parent and the student.
Naomi often talked about feeling awkward as "the only student in the room getting asked all the questions". So we changed our approach to be more personal and conversational, more comfortable for the student. Teaching is not a lecture, it's a conversation of discovery.
I started my career teaching in schools and later on moved towards teaching privately. My 30 years of teaching experience has shown me how to help students learn faster, better and achieve higher grades.
I've taught primary-and-secondary-age children, helping them with SATs and entrance exams to public schools. I've also taught teenagers studying GCSE and A Level Maths, Further Maths and Physics/Chemistry, helping them prepare to apply to Oxbridge.
I've taught in and managed Maths departments in a variety of schools. Keeping up-to-date on the latest Maths syllabuses ensures that I can keep my students on track to achieving the best results they can.
I've also taught many adult students over the years. Sometimes they need to prepare for assessments, want to help their kids with their homework or want to boost their confidence in Maths.
The experience of teaching hundreds of students over the years means this - whatever your situation, I'm ready to help.
I believe in hands-on learning, whatever the age. I take maths and science beyond the curriculum. STEM subjects have their creative side and I'll show you the hidden secrets they hold. How do my lessons work?
You're in charge of your lessons.
After each lesson, you'll be clear on your strengths and what you can do to improve.
You'll be taught in the way that works best for you.
Your tutoring will be customised according to your needs. And if you're not clear on the best approach for you, you can experiment and change your mind later.
I'm flexible in my approach and understand that things change and your needs can change. I'm a tutor who understands that sometimes life gets complicated.
What to expect from the start:
A brief, one-to-one skills assessment (don't worry, this isn't a test!). The skills assessment shows us where you would benefit from my help the most. This is the focus of the first few lessons. This way, you'll see progress fast. This gives the student a nice confidence boost right at the start of the learning journey.
