Online English and English (Foreign Language) Tuition

Devoting my studies to English has been a joy and I have obtained a PhD, MA, BA and PGCE in English from Russell Group universities. My aim is to share my thorough subject knowledge with my students and to inspire them to love English. Quite often, success can follow passion.

I am a reliable, enthusiastic and well-organised teacher and lecturer of English Language and English Literature with over 10 years of teaching experience. Since 2012, I have specialised in A-Level teaching and have experience teaching English Literature, English Language and the combined English Language and Literature A-Levels across several examination boards. I've helped students to achieve and exceed their target grades.

I have also taught both English Language and English Literature in four universities, which equips me to assist undergraduates and postgraduates.

Alongside my three degrees and PGCE, I gained a TESOL certificate in 2005; I have taught English as a Second Language and helped students to achieve their desired IELTS scores. I have enjoyed teaching Pre-Sessional English at three universities, most recently in 2020.

In addition to teaching and lecturing in higher, further and secondary education, I design and deliver adult education courses on Jane Austen and have run 13 courses to date. I would also love to hear from anyone who would like tuition on any of Jane Austen's novels, whether for A-Level, for their university study or for general interest.

As an active researcher, I have delivered twelve conference papers on my research specialism (the role of music in 18th-19th century women's fiction) at international conferences. I am also a published writer with a bank of eight published articles (some of which have appeared in refereed journals). My inclination to be an active researcher and writer helps me to empathise with my students as they strive to be better readers, researchers and writers.

My philosophy is to enthuse and inspire students to love English Literature and Language as much as I do. I would love to hear from anyone who would benefit from my online A-Level and university tuition.

Tutoring Experience

I have devoted my career to teaching, lecturing and tutoring English for over 10 years and have taught in some of the U.K's leading colleges, schools and universities.

To sum up my experience, I have the following:
* 10 years of English teaching experience (in classrooms and lecture theatres)
*PGCE in Secondary English from Durham University
*QTS
*Extensive teaching experience in leading sixth-form colleges in London and Cambridge.
*A-Level teaching specialism since 2012
*Experience teaching Romantic and Eighteenth-Century Literature in higher education.
*Pre-Sessional English teaching experience in three universities
*Experience teaching English Language and Literature in four universities
*I have several years of experience in working with a wide range of students on a one-to-one basis, helping them to achieve and exceed their target grades.
My students' recent (A2) A-Level results are as follows-
• 75% A*-A A-Level grades, 2019-2021
• 100% A*-A, A-level English Language and Literature, 2019-2021

Tutoring Approach

What makes an excellent tutor? While fantastic communication skills, passion and flexibility can be as vital to tutoring success as excellent qualifications, subject knowledge is also very important and I draw on my bank of degrees to inspire students to learn effectively. Students learn best when they collaborate with their tutor and find a passion for a subject. Enthusing, inspiring and sharing my passion for English are very important to me.

Adapting my teaching to the needs of students is vital to ensure that a student reaches their potential. I work on a bespoke scheme of work with the student, asking them to identify their own targets, weaknesses and strengths. I pride myself on being an extremely well-organised educator and often start by checking that they thoroughly understand the assessment criteria so they are clear on what they need to achieve to gain their target grade. I implement the teaching and strategies to address the question of 'how' they will achieve their grades.

As well as being a knowledgeable, conscientious and reliable tutor, I have been complimented on my thorough and ethical approach, my friendliness and the care that I automatically show my students. I get to know my students and introduce resources, tasks and activities that will inspire and enthuse them.
Here's what former students have said about me-

‘Thank you again for your wonderful teaching and counselling throughout the course! It’s been a pleasure being taught by you.’ (A-Level English Literature student scoring grade A, 2018-2019)

‘Thank you so much for your brilliant, brilliant help throughout the last year. You really are a wonderful teacher and I thoroughly enjoyed my lessons with you. The grade is as much yours as it is mine.’ (A-Level English Literature student who scored A*, 2019-2020)

‘Thank you so much! I am genuinely so happy with my result.’ (A-Level English Language and Literature re-sit student, whose grade increased from a grade C to a grade A, 2019- 2020)

‘Without you, I wouldn’t have made it through. Thank you for your commitment and the encouragement you gave’. (University Pre-Sessional Student, 2020)
