Personal Description:

I`m a friendly and reliable Masters graduate with a passion for Maths, Art and Science.

I have a first class BSc in Conservation Biology and an MSc in Applied Ecology (University of Exeter). I also have a Foundation Diploma in Art (University College Falmouth). In October 2016 I will start studying for a PhD in ecology (with a focus on moth diversity).

I am a talented mathematician with a passion for science and ecology. Between 2014 and 2015, I worked as Terrestrial Science Manager with an ecological research project in Madagascar, leading and instructing teams of volunteers. Prior to this, I worked in a laboratory as an entomological research assistant.

I am a proficient artist and author of several illustrated travel journals. I studied with the Slade School of Fine Art in 2006 and have completed various commissions since this time. I am familiar with a range of media, including oils, charcoal, pastels, and sketching.

My patience and ability to explain complex concepts in a way that people can understand sets me apart from other tutors. I am receptive to the needs of each student, and happy to work with the input of parents.

My passion for education comes from a love of these subjects, and I hope to inspire this enthusiasm in all of those I tutor.

Tutoring Experience:

In addition to freelance work with a range of individual students, I have been responsible for tuition within a variety of roles:

As Terrestrial Science Manager with a research project in Madagascar, I delivered training to individuals and groups of volunteers, from the ages of 18 up to 73. I planned and delivered lessons and led informal study sessions, as well as implementing internal tests.

As Taxonomic Assistant at the University of Exeter, I led demonstrations and training for Undergraduate students in the Biology Department.

In 2013-14, I ran a series of interactive sessions with children aged 5-12, introducing them to different types of insect. This included millipedes, tarantulas, scorpions, and giant stick insects. As you can imagine, this required excellent behaviour management skills! The sessions were both educational and fun, and challenged me to adapt my approach according to the different age groups.

Tutoring Approach:

I focus on getting my students to have a good conceptual understanding of the subject so that the memorisation aspects come more naturally. I identify where the weak spots in my students' understanding lie and find ways of explaining things from different perspectives. I also try and link the theory they learn into interesting real-world examples.
