I am University of Cambridge Graduate and current Deputy Headteacher of a South London school. I have a proven track record of academic excellence, having achieved 12 A* grades at GCSE and 5 A grades at A-Level, before committing to a BA, PGCE and Masters in Education at the University of Cambridge between the years 2009 and 2016. My Masters thesis, completed part-time whilst teaching, was awarded a Distinction (86). I have been teaching in a large school in South London since 2013, initially as a Teacher of Humanities subjects, before becoming a Head of Year. Since 2019 I have been an Assistant Headteacher responsible for different elements of the school’s work, both pastoral and curriculum.
I enjoy taking the opportunity to tutor part time outside of my busy career, using my evenings, weekends and extensively my holidays to do this. I usually take on 1-2 students per year for intensive exam preparation. In 2018, I tutored an A-Level History student who obtained an A* grade and a place at a leading US university. In 2019, I tutored an A-Level student of History and Politics. He achieved significantly above his school’s predictions by getting an A in both subjects and has subsequently taken up a place at Durham.
I have also supported students in recent years with 13+ entrance to top independent schools.
Outside of more intensive tutoring placements, I also enjoy tutoring for secondary entrance exam preparation, a wide range of GCSE subjects and also personal statement proof reading and advice and interview practice.
I am happy to travel outside of London for tutoring and have, with past clients, travelled internationally to ensure that students can continue with other activities, whilst getting the most from their tutoring hours.
I am a professional and discrete tutor used to working and living with families of students I am tutoring; references to this effect are available upon request.
A tutoring approach is very difficult to describe as it is very much tailored to the individual being tutored. All tutors must place an emphasis on a lifelong love of learning and attention to detail. Work on recap and memorisation is also key and I have employed a range of research-recommended pedagogical approaches to this in order to secure long-term retrieval and retention.
I also spend a lot of time emphasising the value of excellent oral and written communication skills and developing students’ vocabulary and written prose. Developing students’ written style is one of the most fulfilling aspects of tutoring and one which can benefit students greatly.
I also recognising the value of students (and parents/carers where relevant) receiving thorough and precise feedback that they can act upon in order to see improvement. This feedback can take a range of forms but is an essential tool for a tutor and the student they are working with.
