I have over 30 years senior management experience in the financial services sector (investment management and private equity) at CEO, CIO, COO level following a Master’s degree in Engineering (M.Eng) from Imperial College, London in the late 1980's. I am widely travelled, articulate and have been described as charismatic, engaging with a good sense of humour. I come from a family that is passionate about sport and I have also served as Trustee of a well-known children's charity.
I have selectively tutored children and young adults on a 1:1 basis both face-to-face and more recently via Zoom/Teams/Skype in Mathematics and Science. I still own and manage a financial services company and I am therefore only able to tutor a small number of students in any given academic year. Over the years I have worked with individuals across the spectrum of ability from nuclear physicists to those who found academic studies challenging.
I firmly believe that every individual is unique and there is no single "best approach" to tutoring. A tutor needs to be able to listen just as well as being able to impart knowledge so that the whole process is suited to the individual student, specifically considering their personality and their outside hobbies or interests in addition to more obvious aspects such as aptitude & attitude levels, learning style and capacity. I believe it is important to allay any concerns or fears a student has about a subject (partly by garnering a strong foundation of key building blocks and methods) in order to then build and progress with confidence at a pace that suits them.
