Maths and English Lessons in Maryland

Hi, my name is Connie. I am here to help you develop your classroom English skills- but beyond that, I want to help you express yourself confidently and gain a deeper appreciation for all things literary!

In 2021, I got my MA in Literary Translation from the University of Warwick, where I managed to unite my love for language learning, creative writing and literary analysis. Since then, I've worked in an education charity where I've helped 20+ tutors to develop their skills and resilience.

I have been tutoring English myself for the past eight years, with demonstrable results: many previous English students have gone from a GCSE C grade to an A grade over the course of our lessons. I attribute this to the personalised approach that I take to planning lessons: we work on core curriculum skills through a frame of the student's interests.

I can teach across all exam boards and will go beyond the curriculum to help you improve. I have previously tutored students at KS2, KS3, GCSE and A level, as well as the standardised 11+ curriculum.

Tutoring Experience

Assistant Tutor - Mannan Education
September 2020- July 2021, 170 hours
I assist the principal tutor in delivering high impact 11+ exam preparation classes for years five and six. I move around the classroom to attend to each student's individual needs and use my communication skills to judge how best to adapt my approach with each child.

KS2 Creative Writing and Maths Tutor - Private
January 2021- July 2021, 50 hours
I tutor siblings in creative writing and maths to support their learning over lockdown. We cover the core curriculum in fun, engaging ways and pursue challenging writing activities which engage their imagination. They plan to continue once schools return due to their enjoyment of our lessons.

KS2 Maths and History Tutor- Private
January 2021- March 2021, 40 hours
I tutor siblings in maths and history to supplement their learning over lockdown. We cover advanced maths topics in ways which are suitably broken down to their level; both girls (years 3 and 4) are working at a year 6 level. We make heavy use of interactive material in our history lessons, ranging from games, to youtube videos, to short stories.

A level English Tutor - Titanium Tutors
January 2021- June 2021, 10 hours
I tutored an A level student across a variety of texts. I ask her challenging, open-ended questions and support her in breaking down these questions analytically. I also support her in close readings of the text, and linking these to a wider context and critical frameworks. She finds these sessions very useful.

English Tutor - MyTutor
January 2021- Sept 2022, 40 hours
I work through this online tuition company with a wide variety of students and abilities.
I work with an autistic girl whose confidence in the subject has increased exponentially. I have developed skills in working in an SEN friendly way.
I tutor an honours student and encourage her to make sophisticated connections between characters in context in Tolstoy’s War and Peace.
I support several key stage 3 english students with their schoolwork, to stop them from falling behind in lockdown. Together we break down the concepts taught in ways specially adapted to their skillset- for example, one lesson makes heavy use of visual aids (i.e. cartoons) for a visual learner.

11+ Tutor - Private
December 2020- present, 50 hours
I support a ten-year-old boy with his online learning during term time. I have managed to establish an effective tutoring relationship with the young student and we use technology to our advantage.

English Tutor, Schools Programme - MyTutor
November 2020- Sept 2022, 60 hours
I design and deliver English Literature and Language tuition on a specialised online platform. I chose to work with their schools programme, which targets underprivileged and underperforming students in the UK. This includes group tuition with students with SEN needs ranging from dyslexia to ADHD. My students have seen improvements in self-esteem and concept understanding in a very short span of time.

English and Maths Tutor - Get Further
November 2020- Sept 2021, 150 hours
I deliver a bespoke programme across London colleges, designed to help struggling students gain English and Maths GCSE qualifications and overcome the education gap. Their intensive training has given me insight into how to overcome cognitive overload and deliver truly effective tuition. This has also given me experience in how to encourage and engage discouraged students.

KS2 English Tutor - Titanium Tutors
January 2021- March 2021, 26 hours
I tutored siblings in English online as part of a home school programme. I am able to pitch content to their level whilst still stretching them beyond the curriculum.

GCSE English Literature Tutor - Titanium Tutors
January 2021- April 2021, 20 hours
I tutored a year 10 boy with a focus on close analysis and context of Macbeth. I have also supported him with his essay writing skills. Over six weeks, his grade rose from a 2 to a 6.

EFL Tutor - RefuAid
July 2020- January 2021, 54 hours
I have honed my online teaching skills by taking up a volunteer TEFL position. The lessons take place on the Zoom platform. Over the course of our lessons, the student has excelled from an A2 level to a B1 level, with increased confidence in speaking and comprehension tasks. I have learned how to predict issues EFL learners may have in advance and how to communicate effectively in online lessons.

Tutoring Approach

I work to establish a fun, interactive and dynamic environment within my tuition sessions, built on mutual respect and trust. I like to tailor lesson plans to my students' interests where I can.

In our first session, we will look over what you believe to be your strengths and weaknesses with English; I will use this to inform my future lesson plans.

When we learn a new skill, I will make sure that opportunities to practice and implement it are incorporated into our future sessions to ensure your confidence grows.
