Online History Tutor

I am currently studying at law school and have a training contract with a city law firm to become a solicitor. I studied History at the University of Edinburgh and remain passionate about, and actively engaged with the subject. As an example, I am in the process of writing a historical fiction novel set in Ancient Greece, inspired by my interest in that time period.

I never need an excuse to talk about History and tutoring sessions provide the perfect opportunity to share a passion for the wider subject through discussion, ensuring that students take more away from our sessions than simply a method for improving grades.

Tutoring Experience

  • Volunteered as an assistant teacher at a local primary school in 6th form
  • Have been tutoring various people over the past 4 years, both for GCSE and A Level, with success and improving grades to show for it
  • Whilst at university, I provided regular feedback on essays and dissertations for other students and I was able to assist particularly on essay structure and technique

Tutoring Approach

History is a subject which requires excellent analytical and critical skills for pieces of writing and essays. I work with students to identify where they are struggling and then address the ways in which they should be approaching these pieces of work. Furthermore, I am happy to fill in the gaps where a lack of understanding or knowledge is the issue. I prefer a personalised approach to tutoring based on the needs of each individual rather than a generalised tutoring of the subject.

I am keen to emphasise to students that I am not a teacher, nor am I assessing them, and therefore they should always use our sessions to ask all the questions they don't want to ask in class and ask for informal feedback - I believe this active contribution is crucial to improving grades.

From experience, I have found that often History students struggle most with essay technique and with adding critical analysis to the points they make in essays. I make this a particular point of focus as an effective way of improving grades. Finally, I am always happy to mark pieces of work informally and provide feedback during our sessions.
