Calum

My name is CalumRemoved and I am a highly passionate about education and helping young people. Literature and language have always been the core of my life, and through my passion and proficiency I have had many wonderful experiences and opportunities that have strengthened my understanding and the ability to communicate with people of all ages. I consider it my vocation and duty to give back to young people the joys of education and gift of expression that was imparted to me and help them realise that education and creativity not only opens doors, but also cultivates a strong emotional insight and positive mental health.

Tutoring Experience

During university I studied and practised creative writing in all its forms, from: poetry, screenwriting and novels, enabling me to be versatile and adaptive to various written styles and challenging content. After university, I wanted to remain in the world of literature and also give back, so I chose to go into teaching. Starting as a teaching assistant, I then progressed to becoming a fully qualified teacher and was awarded the grade of "exceptional". Since then, I have been employed full time as a secondary school English teacher in a large school in Wandsworth. I have 3 years experience in teaching GCSE content and am the department lead in designing and delivering the two creative writing segments of the English GCSE.

Tutoring Approach

As a teacher, I am highly flexible in my approach, knowing that each young person and student has different learning styles. Through discussions and study of my students work I can quickly identify what areas require development and what misconceptions within my subject need addressing. I place a high degree of emphasis on developing reading and writing skills through the expansion of vocabulary. As a writer myself, I am able to produce custom made resources for my students, and through scaffolded tasks, help them structure and expand their ideas. I am very excitable and passionate in my subject and know the value of positive praise and expressing my amazement and respect in order to raise student confidence and the rewards of taking creative risks.
