I recently graduated as a doctor of applied mathematics from the University of Bristol, having already attained an MEng 1st class in bioengineering from Imperial College.
I have a genuine love of the physical sciences and mathematics, and have many of the traits I believe make a good teacher - patience, a calm personality, and the understanding that everyone learns at different rates and in different ways.
Tutoring can feel expensive, so I'm open to negotiating rates, and am happy to offer a half price first lesson to make sure the tutee is happy with my teaching style and approach before committing to regular sessions.
I have over 7 years teaching experience, from teaching core mechanical concepts to primary level children using lego and craft, to supervising masters level students with their final year projects (and everything inbetween!).
I've also helped run classes of 30-40 university students provided for engineering students who required help catching up to their peers, in a combination of lecture style lessons and one-on-ones to address where individuals were struggling.
Everyone learns differently, so my focus is on patience and open dialogue, ensuring the learner feels comfortable asking questions without feeling embarrassed or overwhelmed!
Typically I can tailor my approach to fit the needs of the learner, and I'd encourage a discussion on how a client finds they learn best and approaching from that angle. This being said, I find people often respond well to real world examples of where mathematical concepts may be applied. With my extensive time within applied branches of academia these examples could be from everyday life or cutting-edge research!
I'll aim to keep teaching within a comfortable range of difficulty, taking cues from the learner about whether they're ready to advance to more challenging material. However, I'll be honest with the client about where this places them in readiness for upcoming tests and exams and encourage them to set goals for themselves to push them toward higher achievement.
