At the time, I was also working as a Maths lecturer at Newham College and since 2021 I work at West London College. Tutoring Approach

When I tutor math, it's important for me to create a supportive and engaging learning environment for my students. Here are some effective approaches I can consider:

  1. Assessing my student's needs: I begin by understanding my student's current level of understanding and any specific areas they struggle with. This assessment helps me tailor my tutoring sessions to their needs.

  2. Establishing clear goals: I set specific goals for each tutoring session and communicate them to the student. Having clear objectives helps guide my teaching and allows the student to track their progress.

  3. Breaking down complex concepts: Mathematics can often be intimidating due to its abstract nature. I break down complex concepts into smaller, more manageable parts. I start with the basics and gradually build upon them to help my student develop a solid foundation.

  4. Using real-life examples: I relate math concepts to real-life situations whenever possible. This helps students understand the practical applications of what they're learning and makes it more relatable and interesting.

  5. Encouraging critical thinking: Instead of simply providing solutions, I encourage my students to think critically and problem-solve independently. I ask guiding questions that help them arrive at the solution themselves, fostering a deeper understanding of the concepts.

  6. Providing ample practice: Mathematics is a subject that requires practice for mastery. I offer a variety of practice problems, ranging from basic to more challenging, to reinforce the concepts learned and improve problem-solving skills.

  7. Using visual aids and manipulatives: I utilize visual aids, such as diagrams, graphs, and charts, to help illustrate abstract concepts. Manipulatives, like blocks or counters, can also be used to enhance understanding, especially for younger students.

  8. Adapting to my student's learning style: Every student has a unique learning style. I am adaptable and use different teaching methods to cater to their learning style. Some may benefit from visual representations, while others may prefer verbal explanations.

  9. Providing constructive feedback: I offer constructive feedback to my students, highlighting their strengths and areas for improvement. I encourage them to learn from mistakes and celebrate their successes, fostering a positive learning environment.

  10. Reviewing and reinforcing: I allocate time at the end of each session to review the topics covered and summarize key takeaways. I provide additional resources or homework assignments to reinforce learning outside of tutoring sessions.
