Home Tuition for Music in Woking

I am a highly enthusiastic, well-qualified and creative teacher with over 30 years of experience teaching students from primary school age up to adult. I love a wide range of music and enjoy nothing more than sharing this with my students. I studied recorder, Baroque violin, piano and composition at the Royal College of Music, first as a Junior Department student and then for my undergraduate degree, where I took part in everything from the Baroque orchestra to playing the piano for the Big Band and much more besides.

Tutoring Experience

My true vocation is teaching, however, and I have been teaching in secondary schools and Vi form colleges since 1993. In my latest post I am delighted to say that my department has been awarded the highest value added results for Music A level in the country and I have an excellent track record of high results in A level, GCSE Music and also ABRSM theory and practical exams. I also coach students for university and conservatoire entrance exams and auditions. I am able to offer tuition I for A level, GCSE, ABRSM music theory, aural, recorder, piano and all aspects of academic music including GCSE and A level composition.

Tutoring Approach

I absolutely love sharing my lifelong enthusiasm for all things musical, so my approach is to find out the most appropriate starting point for the student and what they want to achieve through friendly discussion. Then I will use all the tools at my disposal to tailor my approach to what will work best for the individual, whether it be a more practical or theoretical method of teaching. I will also play to the student’s own interests in order to keep them engaged - especially with choice of repertoire and also when teaching composition techniques. Having taught A level and GCSE for many years, I have had much experience of enabling students from a wider variety of musical backgrounds, from hip-hop and rap to classical Indian sitar players, to excel.
