My favourite things to learn are languages. At the moment I am learning Russian, and my background is in comparative linguistics. I enjoy all kinds of literature and through tutoring, I get to read and teach texts that maybe I wouldn't have otherwise read. I graduated from St. Catharine's College Cambridge last year, and Cambridge as an institution relies on the 1:1 teaching model which I believe is very effective. Since I have benefitted from that experience, I have had the opportunity to learn what works and what doesn't. I will use this knowledge to influence the way I approach my teaching.
Since graduating I have tutored a few pupils in GCSE English Literature, and have really enjoyed it, so I intend on expanding my work. I have a TEFL and have spent time in Poland, teaching children English. During my time at sixth form, I volunteered at a local primary school to teach year 4-5 children French.
I think students struggle to remember things when they don't understand them, therefore my key approach is to really make sure they understand things first. To check their comprehension levels, I ask them to explain concepts back to me. I use etymology to help them understand and remember key terms and definitions. I help them identify patterns, as well as create mnemonics, which improves retention.
