I have spent 15 years as an academic and really enjoyed the teaching alongside my applied research. About 5 years ago I moved into industry as the Head of R&D at a small company and am looking for a small number of tutees I can support through their studies.
I am a Fellow if the Higher Education Academy, and have taught many subjects across engineering disciplines at all University levels including supervising PhDs since 2007. I specialise in thermofluid subjects (thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, turbomachinery and energy systems) but have also taught statics, dynamics, and mechatronics. I was Programme Director for mechanical engineering programmes at Loughborough University before a similar role at University of Chester, giving me a good holistic view of the engineering disciplines. In my research I have led projects with leading automotive and off-highway equipment manufacturers. I am currently the Head of R&D at a small company developing chemical solutions to energy related problems. I am also a Visiting Research Fellow at University of Chester and regularly support thermofluid teaching at Chester.
My approach depends on the individual student's aims and needs. My tutoring is done online using, for example, Microsoft Teams. I use visualisers which allows me to sketch, annotate and work through equations and problems in real time with my tutees. I have written and taught many degree level modules and as such have many of my own teaching materials, tutorial problems and real world examples to bring to my sessions.
