A primary school teacher & headteacher, I have more than a decade of experience in tutoring children aged 4-13. Rated 'Outstanding' by Ofsted, I've taught English & Maths to thousands of children, achieving excellent results. I support preparation for tests (including SATS, 11+ & Common Entrance) but specialise in improving the self-esteem of children who've fallen behind or lost their motivation to learn.

Tutoring Experience

I've taught thousands of children - predominantly in the some of the UK's most deprived areas. I've therefore much experience in helping children who are starting behind or lower in confidence.

As well as a qualification in school senior leadership (NPQSL), I have Qualified Teacher Status and a BA Hons (2:1) in English. I have also led Mathematics across whole schools of up to 900 pupils.

Tutoring Approach

I have high expectations of my students: studies on the Pygmalion Effect have shown that what a teacher believes their pupils are capable (or not capable) of has a direct influence upon what they are able to achieve.

I also believe that learning should be fun - this leads to higher intrinsic motivation, increased engagement and better retention - and, when done well, should raise a child's self-esteem in the process.

With the above in mind, I always begin by learning as much as I can about my students - from their hobbies and interests to their areas of strength and - most importantly - areas for development.

I then tailor bespoke lessons to address these gaps in knowledge or understanding, while tapping into my students' interests as much as possible along the way.
