I am a qualified and experienced secondary English teacher, having taught full time across KS3, KS4 and KS5.
In addition to my classroom experience, I have been a subject leader of English and AQA examiner; I have also been responsible for the development and success of a whole school tutoring programme which focused around literary and increasing pupils' reading age. This involved leading a team of three tutors to identify and address pupils' barriers to learning with specific focus on reading and English. I have completed the Fresh Start Phonics programme and manage transition from Y6 to Y7 for our weaker readers.
I have tutored in AQA English Language and Literature for a number of years and I am very knowledgeable about the current specification. Whilst I promote that the subject of English is an academic discipline, I am more aware than ever that outstanding English teaching can spark the ability to self advocate, promote agency of the individual and foster a connection to the community.
It would be trite to say that I am passionate about the subject of English. Described by some as a ‘beautiful braid’, I take pleasure in weaving together the complex, diverse threads of knowledge and skill that pupils require when studying English. In March 2023, I delivered a nine hour programme entitled Biopolitics in Literature: Robots, Clones and Us and enjoyed debating questions such as 'whatis living?' and 'is it human to thrive or survive?’ through the study of modern literature at York's ISSP masterclass event hosted by St Peter's School.
I have plenty of experience working with pupils with a wide range of special educational needs, including dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia and ASD. In my lessons and tutoring sessions, material is made accessible but not easier so that all pupils can achieve their full potential.
Positive relationships are at the forefront of my practice - I am very approachable and recognise the barriers to learning that pupils may have. I can offer simple, practical strategies to reading and writing skill whilst building pupils' confidence around reading for comprehension and inference.
