Man Lap

A friendly, passionate and patient tutor with +8 years maths tutoring experience, eager to help learners build exam confidence, feeling confident in understanding maths and willing to go the extra mile to ensure student's academic success.

I studied Mathematics at Heriot-watt University and then BA Education with specialism in Numeracy at the University of Stirling, which has led me to develop a passionate interest in teaching maths.

I am based in the Bishopbriggs area but I also tutor in other areas. I have been tutoring for +8 years at both primary and secondary level. However, I mainly specialise in secondary level mathematics from S1 - S3, Nat 4, Nat 5 to Higher.

Tutoring Experience

I have been tutoring for +8 years at both primary and secondary level around the Bishopbriggs, Lenzie, Kirkintilloch, Bearsden, Milngavie and Robyroyston area.

Additionally, I have also worked in several primary schools in the Bishopbriggs and Cumbernauld area.
My +8 years of tutoring and work experience in schools has allowed me to identify areas where pupils commonly have difficulty with and in doing so, develop a teaching approach that prevents gaps in learner knowledge and create lessons that are easy to understand and inspire confidence in learners.

Furthermore, tutoring mathematics for +8 years around the Bishopbriggs, Lenzie, Kirkintilloch has led to develop an in-depth knowledge of the areas learners commonly struggle in and delivering a personalised approach for each learner by observing how they learn.

I believe in approaching teaching with dedication, patience and going the extra mile to provide the level of support learners deserve.

Tutoring Approach

Teaching Practice – What will you get out of the lessons?

A step-by-step approach to teaching and an easy-to-follow lesson structure - I adopt a systematic approach to teaching that ensures lessons are easily understood by explaining mathematics that follows a step- by-step process using everyday language that allows pupils to understand mathematics easier.

Identify pupil's strengths and weaknesses - I will firstly identify pupil's strengths and weaknesses so I can identify areas where students need to work on. This will ensure there are no gaps in the pupil’s knowledge so pupils feel confident in their understanding.

Building exam confidence through ample past papers practice - A main focus in my teaching practice is focusing on building exam confidence. I will introduce various successful exam strategies, past-paper revision techniques and plenty of exam practice so pupils can feel confident going into the exam.

Clear communication and transparency of pupil's learning progress - I will consistently update both students and parents on the learning progress at the end of the lesson so everyone is on the same page.

Recommendations for maths practice books and flexible lesson scheduling - I will also recommend any books for exam practice. Furthermore, I provide flexible scheduling of lessons to work around the pupil's after school activities and holidays.

Outline of the lessons?
The first lesson will focus on identifying areas where pupils need work on.
In the first few initial lessons, I will cover maths topics that pupils struggle with.
Future lessons will cover maths topics in the curriculum that pupils are doing in class.
Towards the end of the term, prior to exams, I will focus on exam practice and past papers.
