I'm an Italian student currently studying English Literature and History at Durham University and I'm about to start my third and final year of undergraduate study. I love both subjects and my dream is to become a history professor!
I've tutored GCSE and A level students for a year in English Literature and I really enjoyed the experience, hence why I want to continue.
My approach varies depending on the subject:
For English, I usually tend to take a thematic approach to the works of literature we look at, analysing quotes together and considering the possible readings we can apply to symbols, motifs, and other clue components of literary works.
For History, we'll look at some clue dates and events to create a stable groundwork upon which to build upon. Then, we'll delve into source analysis, consider key historical figures, asking questions and coming up with various interpretations.
For French and Italian the approach is very much more dependent on the level of the tutee. For beginners, my idea is to focus on a set of words, a specific context (School, Restaurant, Theatre) or a specific tense each lesson, practising with light conversation and trying to develop a correct form of pronunciation. For more advanced tutees, these latter elements become mere revision; the focus for them would be on specific situations, articles, or passages, more advanced contexts and exercises of comprehension, with greater focus on written and oral production and conversation.
For all subjects, of course, I will base myself also around the specific programme followed by the tutee, looking now and again at possible exam questions and approaches to the exam(s). If there are preferences regarding a different approach in lessons that can be easily discussed and changes can be implemented!
