I'm Aileen, a freelance tutor, mentor, editor, and writer who loves to help students and clients towards their deadlines and dreams — melding hard work, curiosity, and a genuine joy for learning to create a pathway to success. Indeed, both in my work and my outlook on life, I am an avowed enthusiast, and this is an energy I bring to all of my tutoring. Proud of both my extroverted and introverted facets, I can perhaps best be described as a people-loving bookworm — as likely to strike up a meaningful conversation with a stranger, as hibernate and devour a novel of a rainy afternoon.
I have 12 years’ experience as a tutor and mentor — especially in coaching National 5, Higher, and Advanced Higher students over their SQA hurdles (getting in there nice and early with a wee metaphor!), as well as bachelor's and master's students, PhD candidates, and academics with their studies, research, and publications, respectively.
I may be a particularly good fit for you as a tutor if the mainstream education system isn’t currently giving you what you need and/or you want a tutor who is patient, understanding, and encouraging. If you have any additional support needs, I invite you to tell me in advance how I can best support you or we can work it out together as we go.
In practice, my support can look like:
• working alongside you to build an exam strategy that truly works for you
• centring our Reading for Understanding, Analysis, and Evaluation practice on topics you enjoy
• equipping you to write essays that both answer the exam question logically and powerfully convey what you really think
• helping you make useful connections between your course and the life skills you’ll need beyond it
I also pride myself on offering robust moral support to all of my students and clients. Each and every student is different, so we'll have an ongoing discussion about what you most need and want to focus on — that way you can best target your efforts for maximum results. And I wholeheartedly believe there is no such thing as a 'stupid' question, meaning that you are welcome and encouraged to share what's on your mind at any time.
