I got in touch with Hunter to help prepare me for a grade 8 theory exam that I was taking a month later, and I wanted some structure and tutoring for that. I was worried not only about the content, but being able to do it in the time. The whole experience was excellent. Hunter was knowledgeable, friendly, knew the ABRSM syllabus and how they marked, understood what I needed, and helped enormously. He was also accommodating in terms of finding times that suited me. Particularly helpful aspects were helping me a have clear structure for the free melody composition, understanding the harmonic structure of the pieces before I started answering, and thinking about chord function contextually. I got to the point where I'd taken in all I could a week or so before the exam, so paused my lessons. I took the exam and passed, and would now like to have some more sessions to look at composition.

Maggie has introduced topics each week and given me exercises to work on during the week, and we go through my answers in the next lesson. I have found the lessons and accompanying homework enjoyable, challenging and instructive, and Maggie is delightfully positive and extremely knowledgeable. I have learnt so much!

I'm an older person who has been studying grade music 6-8 theory, and wanted some support in developing small complete compositions to embed the theory, move beyond the fragments of composition in the grades, and enjoy developing my own pieces and style. Frances is professional, highly knowledgeable and competent, very encouraging, and has created a programme that adapts to my abilities and wishes. I like the idea of learning within the traditions of different historical periods, and she has embraced that with me, and I gather other people have very different aims, and so have a different programme. We have online lessons which work very well (I live the other side of the country), after which she offers me a mix of short and open-ended exercises, that I can adapt to my interests and time available. She's introduced me to ideas and genres that were completely new to me and a lot of fun. My sense is that she is keeping an eye on what I find easy and hard, and adapting to that. I like that she pushes me to tidy up and finish pieces. It's all immensely enjoyable, and I've produced things that I wouldn't have imagined when I started.
