Personal Description:

I am an classically-trained, all-round amateur musician from a musical family. I began playing the ‘cello with my father at the age of four, and the violin with my brother a little later. Following a brief stint with the local Suzuki violin school I took lessons from Howard Davis, Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music (FRAM) for seven years.
At eight I joined the choir of St John's College Cambridge, and studied piano, keyboard harmony and composition with a local teacher (FRCO, ARCM) and performing artist.
Throughout my teens I worked with Clarence Myerscough, FRAM on the violin and with Alan Ridout on composition and harmony. I also took lessons on the piano and the euphonium. I was a member of Pro Corda, (the National Association of Young Chamber Music Players) and played for two years with the Essex Youth Orchestra under Dennis Wicks and John Georgiadis.
I reached ABRSM Grade 8 in violin, piano, euphonium and Grade 6 in Music Theory.

Tutoring Experience:

At university I played violin semi-professionally and taught my first two violin pupils. Upon graduation I decided not to pursue a career in music but I have continued to teach on and off and kept my hand in as an amateur player (Haydn Chamber Orchestra, Corinthian Orchestra, Oxford Chamber Orchestra, Oxford Sinfonia, Oxford Chamber Music Festival Players' Network, etc.). I am currently working part time in an effort to dedicate more time to playing and teaching.
My current pupils range in age from nine to fifty+ and in ability from a more-or-less beginner (still perfecting reading music) to somewhere around Grade 8 standard.

Tutoring Approach:

I charge Musicians’ Union recommended rates, which are currently, £40.50 / 60”, £30.00 / 45”, and £24 / 30”.
Fees are payable by electronic transfer, in advance, either monthly or termly. Once payment is received I consider that lessons are booked. I do not offer reimbursements for booked lessons cancelled without good reason or adequate notice. However, if you can give me enough notice, I will always attempt to reschedule a lesson within the same week and teach the lesson that you have paid for.
I currently teach young children from the age of six years (or exceptionally from five years), teenagers and adults, and I teach from complete beginners (as long as they are genuinely interested and genuinely musical) to around grade 8 or a little beyond.
I am happy to teach for Associated Board grade exams but I also have pupils who play simply for pleasure and who have no intention of sitting exams; I insist on regular practice, and on playing scales, but not on exams.
I can also help prepare for the Grade 5 Theory exam if needed. (Passing Grade 5 Theory is a requirement before taking ABRSM instrumental exams of Grade 6 and up.)
