I am an classically-trained, all-round amateur musician from a musical family. I began playing the ‘cello with my father at the age of four, and the violin with my brother a little later. Following a brief introduction in the local Suzuki violin school I began to study seriously with Howard Davis, Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music (FRAM). I started piano lessons with another FRAM soon after.
At eight I became a Chorister in the choir of St John's College Cambridge. Alongside singing I continued to study the violin with Howard Davis and studied piano, keyboard harmony and composition with a local teacher (FRCO, ARCM) and performing artist.
At thirteen moved to Canterbury to study the violin with Clarence Myerscough, FRAM and composition with Alan Ridout. I also continued to study piano and learned to play the euphonium in a brass band. In the holidays I attended residential courses with Pro Corda, (the National Association of Young Chamber Music Players) and played for two years with the Essex Youth Orchestra.
I reached ABRSM Grade 8 in violin, piano, euphonium and Grade 6 in Music Theory.
At university I played violin semi-professionally and taught my first two violin pupils. After graduation I decided not to pursue a career in music but I have continued to teach on and off and kept my hand in as an amateur player (The Corinthian Orchestra, London Rehearsal Orchestra, Oxford Sinfonia, Oxford Chamber Music Festival Players' Network, etc.). Currently I am working part time and making an effort to find more pupils and and to dedicate more time to teaching.
My current pupils range in age from nine to forty + and in ability from a complete beginner (still learning to read music) to somewhere around Grade 8 standard.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic I am currently teaching online only, (which is why my Profile now reads 'does not teach from home' and 'unwilling to travel) and I have adjusted my prices accordingly.
Lessons cost £30 for an hour and £20 for half and hour. (£25 for 45")
Fees are payable by electronic transfer, in advance, at the start of each month.
I charge in full for lessons booked and then cancelled at short notice. If you give me enough notice, where possible, I will rearrange that one lessons during that same week, at no extra charge.
I currently teach young children from the age of five, adolescents and adults, and I teach from complete beginners (as long as they are genuinely interested and genuinely musical) to around grade 8 or a little beyond.
I am happy to teach for Associated Board grade exams but I also have pupils who play simply for pleasure and who have no intention of sitting exams; I insist on regular practice, and on playing scales, but not on exams.
I can also help prepare for the Grade 5 Theory exam if needed. (Passing Grade 5 Theory is a requirement before taking ABRSM instrumental exams of Grade 6 and up.)
