I believe every child in the world has the right to a free and quality education and therefore, donate 15% of my hourly rate to 'Theirworld' a charity based within the UK. A registered charity which is working towards providing a brighter future for every child. More than 260 million children and young people are out of school, and many of them will never get an education. By 2030 Their world would like to ensure that every child completes free, equitable and quality primary and secondary education. Registered Charity 1092312
I have taught and exhibited my work internationally. Exhibiting in both London and Tokyo in 2017.
I received my MA in textile design from The Royal College of Art in 2016, after receiving a first-class BA (Hons) in printed textiles at Edinburgh College of Art. I am a material designer and design researcher based in London. My interdisciplinary practice focuses on the intersection of design, materials, textiles and technology. My main interest is in the development of new materials using high-technology alongside traditional craftsmanship; the application of colour and pattern, in combination with a strong attention to detail and quality. My core methodology is the implementation of design research, and development through problem-solving, within the area of social design with the aim of improving human well-being and livelihood.
My teaching experience has involved teaching/tutoring design within academia including the workshop setting, group tutorials and one-to-one at The Kyoto Institute of Technology, Japan and The Royal College of Art, London. Please refer to my on file academic references for further information and confirmation of my high level of professional capacity; reliability, trustworthiness and professionalism from the head of the textiles department at Edinburgh College of Art part of Edinburgh University and the head of the textiles department at The Royal College of Art, London. A professional reference and letter of high recommendation from The Kyoto Institute of Technology, Japan is available on request, since I am only able to add two references to my profile, who are based in the UK.
Student feedback in February 2019:
“John knows his subject very well. His approach is also very professional. John is a fantastic listener and understands me as if he has been through all the things that concern me. He is very patient with me and puts me back on track right away. I find John very friendly. He has beautiful manners and is so polite and kind. He also tends to repeat aspects on other tutorials and thus eventually I fully understand. John leaves me to discover my path myself and does not guide me to a particular style. He has noted my strong points and encouraged me with them, but always wants me to explore other options. Very prompt. I always get a message 10 minutes before his arrival. I feel I am learning the theory of textile design and next week I have asked John to work on a practical part; colour in Adobe Photoshop and he has told me he will arrange the session to be as I have asked for”
(Laleh Fayaz, a current student – Textile Design).
I have worked with individual students one-on-one and can organize group activities for students who are studying the same material. I offer compassionate, motivating assistance to students. I value professionalism and strive to maintain my high rating and standard of reliability; managing my commitments, time and communication well to build a strong tutor/student relationship that produces results. I am competent, efficient and highly skilled in the field of textile design. Whatever your ability level, I can guide you through the textile design process, in bite-sized chunks, at your own pace, working towards portfolio preparation, further study, or entry into the industry.
I believe that preparation is key and start the tutor/student relationship by finding out as much as I can about the student's needs, issues, and strengths including what they hope to achieve, so we can work out exactly what we need to cover. I aim to quickly put the new student at ease, so the experience is fun, interesting and comfortable. I listen carefully to the aspirations and expectations of the student. I am patient and sensitive to the individual needs of each student with an innovative and interesting tutoring approach. Please contact me for more information on block booking discounts. I have an up to date (CBR) criminal background check from the Disclosure and Barring Service issued on 06 March 2018.
