  1. What differentiates First Tutors: Arts & Crafts?

First Tutors: Arts & Crafts empowers you to find teachers in your local area according to your preferences. So, you can browse teachers and consider their fees, experience and availability before making your choice.

For teachers, we provide a great way to reach a wider audience of learners who are actively seeking your services. You can choose which assignments you take and set your own fees.

  2. Does First Tutors: Arts & Crafts offer help?

If you are struggling to use the website, contact us via our online support form and we will try to help you.

For learners seeking advice on choosing a teacher, read Which Teacher? or for commencing lessons please see Your First Lesson.

  3. Why should I use First Tutors: Arts & Crafts rather than a local recommendation?

First Tutors: Arts & Crafts provides a built-in review facility - we invite feedback from learners about how their lessons have gone. For learners, this provides objective advice, whilst also giving the best teachers a platform upon which to shine. Plus of course, our teachers outline their qualifications and experience up front and will usually offer references - will your friend's friend?

  4. Can you help with subjects not currently listed?

Contact us and we'll review our listings to try and help you.

  5. How do I give feedback about my teacher?

We very much appreciate the feedback our learners give to teachers. After a couple of weeks, we'll email you inviting feedback - we allow a couple of weeks so that as a learner, you have time to try your teacher a couple of times first.

  6. Who uses First Tutors: Arts & Crafts?
    • Individuals and families learning a new hobby
    • Adult learners looking to learn an subject for fun or for exams and professional purposes.

Frequently Asked Questions by Learners

  1. At what point do I have to pay?

Only when you have chosen to accept a teacher's offer of tuition do we charge a £4.99-19.99* introduction fee. It is free to search, browse and contact teachers. You must pay your teacher their hourly rate directly. We ask that learners please honour their commitment and arrange and pay for their first lesson with their selected teacher. This means the teacher's fees are always covered. Beyond this, your decision to continue with your teacher will obviously be a reflection of how well your first lesson progresses. Please refer to our terms and conditions for further details.

  2. How do I choose a teacher?

Please see our article, Which Teacher? for guidance.

  3. How do I contact the teachers?

Contact a prospective teacher free of charge by becoming a member. Once your teacher has received and accepted your request we will release their contact details at your request, conditional upon you paying a £4.99-19.99* fee. We also e-mail the teacher your details simultaneously so you can both contact one another.

  4. I have not heard from a teacher and wish to release their details.

It may be your teacher is on holiday or temporarily unavailable. We contact all teachers as soon as you make your enquiry but cannot force them to respond. We would always recommend contacting more than one teacher.

Frequently Asked Questions by Teachers

  1. How will I hear from prospective learners?
  2. How do I commence lessons?
  3. How do I change my profile?
  4. I understand learners can create feedback about me, how does this work?
  5. Do I need a CRB check to be a teacher?
  6. What qualifications do I need to be a teacher?
  7. Do you employ teachers?
  1. How will I hear from prospective learners?

We will e-mail you when a prospective learner requests to hear from you and invite you to log in to your member area and respond to the request as soon as possible. Please note that teachers who do not respond to learners (neither accept or decline) will have their profiles suspended so other teachers can benefit from the opportunities.

  2. How do I commence lessons?

Once the learner has accepted your offer of lessons we will send you their contact details so you can call and arrange a first meeting. We would recommend acting on this quickly.

  3. How do I change my profile?

Once you have registered you can log in at any time to alter your profile or fees through your member's area.

  4. I understand learners can create feedback about me, how does this work?

After a couple of weeks, we ask learners to create a brief comment about their teacher. This is because the tuition industry works on referrals: the more good feedback you receive as a teacher, the more enquiries you are likely to attract. Of course, as a teacher you can also reply to any feedback.

  5. Do I need a CRB check to be a teacher?

No, though it helps to have references available for parents to see.

  6. What qualifications do I need to be a teacher?

Given the diversity of subjects on offer through First Tutors: Arts & Crafts, it is impossible for us to be prescriptive. You will know whether or not you have sufficient subject knowledge to teach and whether your qualifications seem credible to a parent or adult learner.

  7. Do you employ teachers?

No, all teachers work on a self-employed basis.
