Personal Description:

I am currently a freelance researcher and teacher. For over twenty years I have taught a variety of courses at University level. During this time, I have successfully worked with many students on improving and developing their writing skills in an academic setting.
Creative writing was something I had always done in my spare time. A few years ago, I started to work freelance in order to free up time to write my first novel. In doing this, I applied many of the techniques I had used with students, emphasising structure, continuity and logic as well as editing and re-writing. I was signed up by the first agent I approached with the manuscript and we are currently negotiation with publishers, selling the book as part of a trilogy.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught students in Universities and in workplace settings and vocational courses as well as occasional private students for twenty years. I have also been a visiting lecturer at a number of universities and colleges.

Teaching Approach:

My approach to teaching is based on developing the student's awareness of what they wish to write: we explore genre, discuss elements of plotting and characterisation and expore ways of breathing life into the work - whether this is a short story, an autobiography or a full length novel.

By providing exercises and checklists, students can follow up on the work we have done face to face in their own time. We'll also discuss how to make your work saleable and how to write a synopsis for agents and publishers.

Additionally, if you have existing work you would like to have critically assessed I can also provide this - either for some chapters or for an entire book.
