Personal Description:

I am 30 years old. I am from Lichfield although I now live in Stone. However, I work in Stafford and would be more than willing to tutor in this area during weekday late-afternoons (i.e after 4pm). I am engaged, and hope to be married (as soon as I can find well-paid employment). I also hope to start a family soon.

I enjoy most music, and, as my qualifications suggest, I love to read. My academic interests centre around Romanticism (Shelley, Keats, Wordsworth etc), especially its relation to the science of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, although I am also a big fan of the horror genre, and enjoy reading (and watching) a lot of modern books/films. Despite this, I am not what you'd call 'bookish': I enjoy boxing (watching, not fighting), and XBOX live (Modern Warfare 2).

While Romanticism is my central interest, I also love, and have studied at University level, a wide range of literature, from Medieval to Postmodernism and beyond.

My study of Creative Writing has furthered my interest in this area, and I am an aspiring author. I have 30,000 word manuscript I am currently working on, although finding the time to complete it is a bit of a challenge.

Before university I worked in a variety of industries, from Quality Control to making stairs. I have been a manager for J D Wetherspoon, and I now work for Stafford Borough Council as a Licensing Support Officer.

I am easy-going, approachable, and friendly, but also diligent and professional.

Teaching Experience:

While at College I helped the Head of the English Department teach an English Language/Literature evening class. I worked with students in small groups as well as one-to-one. I also instructed the class as a whole.

While I have not taught since then per se, in my recent role as a manager I utilised many of the same skills and abilities, such as using effective communication to explain complex and new ideas to individuals and groups in order to ensure they are fully competent in the area in question.

I hope to begin teaching an Adult Education class some time soon at Staffordshire University or Stoke College.

Teaching Approach:

A wise man once said 'Tell me and I will forget, show me and I may remember, involve me and I will learn.'

That is how I teach. I believe that unless you are actively taking part, you are not getting as much from the lesson as you should. I will ask for a background on what you wish to learn, and prepare before the session. I will do this in such a way as I will know where I want to end, and will give you a helping hand in finding your own way to the conclusion. If we happen to take a different route to the one I had planned, or even if we arrive at a different destination, perhaps we will BOTH learn something new along the way. Indeed, as another wise man once said, 'By learning you will teach, by teaching you will learn.'

I am not an old man with a tweed jacket sporting elbow patches. I am young enough to be able to relate to the younger audience, and old, wise, and mature enough to be able to engage the older audiences on a level. This is key to my teaching ethos. I will attempt to explain and teach in a way that is accessible to the tutee, using examples and language that they are able to relate to.

I have a postgraduate degree in English Literature as well as a BA in English with Creative Writing. This combination means I am able to teach about the technical and literary aspects of writing from a critical perspective, as well as from the point of view of the writer.

In addition to being knowledgeable in such elements of creative writing as characterisation, setting and scene, atmosphere, dialogue, and plot, I will try to teach a conscious awareness of the ability of language to evoke feeling, emotion, and response; of the way in which writing can be strengthened through cause and effect; of the power of understatement and the importance of conveying complex ideas through simple language; and of the absolute importance of accurate research and background materials.
