Private Maths and Physics Tutor in Haringey

My eclectic background - which diversely spans from biochemistry to acting - means I am a well-rounded, personable and versatile tutor. This dichotomy of science and art means I have a balanced approach to teaching, and am very flexible in my approaches to learning, and the range of subjects with which I can assist students.

I have held a passion for the acting since a young age - leading me to train at The Oxford School of Drama after previously completing my Masters in Molecular & Cellular Biochemistry at Worcester College, Oxford. My work as an actor has ranged from all manner of plays, films, TV and radio work; I also record audiobooks for the RNIB Talking Books service, and am a member of the human rights theatre company iceandfire. I love to remain on the other side too, and hence attend the theatre and cinema as often as possible.

I am extremely passionate about languages and am in the process of teaching myself German, Spanish and Italian at present; and - when the opportunities arise - am a huge enthusiast of swimming, skiing, and photography.

Tutoring Experience

I have garnered over nine years' extensive experience as a Private Tutor for a variety of students and skill sets, after graduating from Oxford with a 2:1 Honours MBiochem degree in Molecular & Cellular Biochemistry. My particular focus areas in tutoring include GCSE & iGCSE Triple Sciences (Biology/Chemistry/Physics), GCSE Double Sciences (Core & Additional), and AS/A Level Biology. Please note that these are all equivalent to the studies undertaken between the ages of 14-18.

Under my tuition, one of my long-term iGCSE students recently achieved triple 9 grades in his Biology, Chemistry and Physics results. A iGCSE Biology mature student also progressed from zero prior experience to an A* grade in just one year; and another international student, new to the UK system in Year 11, went from a U grade in her mocks to an A in her final Biology GCSE, after a week's intensive study together over the Easter holidays.

I also worked for over two years as the resident Science/Chemistry teacher at Rhodes Farm School, an independent hospital school, in North London. Here I taught students at KS3, GCSE and A Level; whilst also communicating with the pupils, their families, and their home schools to ensure they kept up with their studies, and prepared for eventual reintegration into mainstream education.

Tutoring Approach

My work as a professional actor means that I am an open, engaging, animated, and communicative teacher. I encourage my students to take an active role in their own learning, making their own notes and feeling free to ask questions as we work. I avoid an approach of simply reciting and copying - always challenging students with guided questions and visualisations of the problem at hand.

Most of all - I try to make my lessons fun and enjoyable! Science is a fascinating, vital topic; and if I feel I have instilled a sense of this in my students, then the lesson has been a success. When this happens, exam success tends to follow!
