I am fully qualified English teacher with many years experience of teaching at secondary and sixth form level as well as an experienced tutor.

As well as tutoring English, I am an examiner for English Language A Level and I am currently working on writing a book about poetry. I have a great enthusiasm for my subject and my students tell me that my enthusiasm is infectious! Friendly and approachable; I really enjoy helping students to achieve the best that they possibly can.

Tutoring Experience

I taught English for many years in secondary schools (11-16) and saw many students through to GCSE success. I subsequently taught English at a Sixth Form College (16-18). My special area of interest is English Language but I am also very experienced in teaching the Literature syllabus for GCSE and A Level.

I have experience of teaching GCSE English Language and English Literature as well as A Level English Language, A Level English Literature and the combined course (Language and Literature). I have also taught A Level Media Studies and Film Studies - these subjects often go well with English A Level!

Tutoring Approach

With new tutees, I am keen to find out their needs, anxieties and strengths. To this end, it is useful to see something that you have written and to talk to you about your experiences of English at school/college. It is important to see tutoring as a partnership working towards a goal. As the tuition is one-to-one, I like to focus on your individual requirements. This may be as simple as getting to grips with a specific text or the remit may be broader such as improving comprehension skills or writing. I am happy to work with students with special educational needs to focus on specific strategies to improve literacy skills and ultimately grades achieved.
